Objectives for the Working Party on Marine Corrosion:
The objectives of the Working Party can be defined as follows:
- to provide engineers, designers and materials specialists with information related to the use of materials in the marine environment;
- to act as or to create a platform for discussion by authorities from industry and academic institutions on materials aspects of marine corrosion;
- to identify and to define areas in which information is not up-to-date or not available in the required form;
- to identify areas in which research and development is required;
- to establish and maintain contacts with other workers in the same area and either co-operate with them or avoid duplication of activities.
In order to meet the objectives of the Working Party the following working methods have been decided to be used in the Working Party.
- Organize and participate in Workshops, Seminars and Conferences
- Prepare guidelines on all aspects of marine corrosion
- To either carry out research or simulate others to do so in areas where a lack of scientific knowledge has been shown to exist.
History:
In the field of Marine Corrosion the important issue is the resistance of materials against corrosion in contact with seawater. In order to cover this area the Working Party "Marine Corrosion" was proposed after the International Congress of Marine Corrosion held in Cannes 1964. During the years, the Working Party has been active in several areas. In the frame of the working party literature studies have been performed on the subject of marine corrosion testing, crevice corrosion in seawater and corrosion of non ferrous metals in sea water. The Working Party has organised and supported workshops, seminars and conferences many times in its history, of which several documented in the EFC series. A round robin test at several test sites studying crevice corrosion in seawater on stainless steel was carried out in the early 1990 by the Working Party. Ten years later the working party initiated a European Commission funded project, Crevcorr, which developed crevice corrosion testing techniques that should be able to predict service performance in seawater. In this project another round robin test programme was carried out, both in natural seawater and developed new synthetic seawater with bio capacity developed during the project, the latter being a major achievement in the field of crevice corrosion testing. Not only stainless steel has been the topic for the Working Party, non ferrous metals such as aluminium and copper based alloys have been included in the activities. Since the EFC series was introduced the Working Party has been involved in six publications in the EFC series until today. Furher details of the history of the Working Party can be found in the history publication of EFC.
Work programe:
- Prepare a new EFC publication with the working title "Corrosion Behaviour of Alloys used in the Offshore Marine Environment - A Guide for New Engineers".
- Arrange a Marine Corrosion session at EUROCORR each year
- Work with performance of copper base alloys in seawater piping systems in order to find areas where more information is needed
- Follow the standardisation of the test methods from the "Crevcorr" project
- Survey about existing seawater testing laboratories
Call for next meeting:
The next meeting will be held during EUROCORR in Moscow at Wednesday, 15 September 2010, 14:00.
