Standards in Corrosion

National, international and other types of standards exist for various aspects of corrosion, corrosion prevention and testing. Standards can be of great educational value since they represent the distillation of broad experience, particularly in the case of international and European standards.
The situation concerning corrosion standards in Europe was examined in detail in a conference held in London in 1990. The proceedings were published in full by The Institute of Metals in the volume “Corrosion Standards: European and International Developments” P McIntyre and A D Mercer eds. 1991, 108p. This publication includes lists of national Standards originating from Europe and USA as well as ISO standards extant at the end of 1990. This important field was revisited in a second conference held in 1995. Again, the proceedings were published in full, this time by The Institute of Materials, in the volume “Corrosion Standards II: National, European and International Standards, 1990-1995”, P McIntyre and D J Mills, eds, 1996, 170p.
Standardisation activity has continued unabated, particularly within CEN where many of the international standards produced by ISO have been reissued as EN standards. These documents are the most relevant standards within Europe and lists of published European standards (ENs) and provisional European Standards (prENs) concerned with corrosion are given below.
